This African art sculpture a Kalao (Hornbill) Senufo Bird also known as the Guardian Bird is from Southern Mali. Specialized artisans hand-carved it from a solid piece of wood and cladded it in brass metal and used raffia to signify the feathers.
Senufo people believed the Hornbill bird (Kalao) was one of the first living creatures symbolizing intellectual power and significant knowledge. The importance of the beak touching its swollen belly proposes pregnancy.
